The Tibetan Yaks

The Animals

Yaks are native to the Himalayas.  Their origins of high altitude,  sparse vegetation, and cold weather mean they are hardy and efficient.  They are resilient and healthy animals, and eat much less than beef cattle.

The majority of calves arrive in March and April, but some arrive as early as February and as late as August.  Calves are very active right away and are full of energy as they grow, running and playing with other calves.  Cows are generally very protective.

On the farm, the primary purpose of the yaks is meat.  Fibre is also collected as they shed in spring, weather permitting.  In their homeland, they are also used for milk, pack, and draught purposes.

Farm Practices

How the yaks are raised here

The focus here is on the yaks' health and your health.

The yaks live outside in the fresh air at all times.  They have access to drinking water all year although they sometimes just prefer to eat snow.  In summer, they graze in diverse pastures and participate in rotational grazing to keep the pastures healthy and clean.  In winter they are fed a variety of hay.  Their winter feed is grown and harvested on the farm with no use of commercial fertilizers, preservatives, or any other chemicals.  They are mostly fed in strategic locations in winter to make the best use of the natural fertilizer they leave behind.  They are also provided a mineral mix suited to their needs on a free-choice basis.
